The Scuola Normale Superiore (SNS) is a public higher learning institution in Pisa and Florence, Tuscany, Italy. It is often known in Italy as the Normale.
It was created in 1810, during the Napoleonic era, as an extension and equivalent of France’s École normale supérieure. A “normal school”, it was put in charge of training teachers, in the sense that they teach “norms”; superiore (“superior” or “advanced”) means that it trains teacher for secondary education. Many scientists, researchers and intellectuals, as well as prominent public figures, including two Presidents of Italy, were also students there.
Historically established in Pisa, it was known until 2014 as the Scuola Normale Superiore di Pisa, until it was extended to Florence by absorbing the Italian Institute of Human Science.
The Normale, together with the University of Pisa and Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies, is a part of the Pisa University System. It is one of the three officially sanctioned special-statute public universities in Italy, being part of the process of Superior Graduate School in Italy (grandes écoles), or Scuola Superiore Universitaria.According to the World University Ranking 2018 made by the Times Higher Education, Normale is considered to be among the best universities in Italy and among the best 100 in Europe.
