Info

Haven Arts is a contemporary art gallery founded in 2004 by philanthropist Barry Kostrinsky in the Mott Haven area of the South Bronx in New York City. Haven Arts is an internationally recognized project space that is at the forefront of an effort to regenerate the South Bronx, while maintaining a commitment to inhibit the destructive effects of gentrification by actively engaging community inclusiveness. The gallery primarily exhibits the work of local artists, notably Beth Brideau, Matthew Burcaw, Angel Chevrestt, Linda Cunningham, Darcy Dahl, Eric Feinblatt, Anne Humanfeld, Barry Kostrinsky, Aristides Logothetes, John Mascaro, and J.C. Rice.
Bill Aguado, 62, president of the Bronx Council on the Arts said, “I’m not necessarily against gentrification as a concept,” he said. “But I’m against it as it exploits real estate values and exploits established communities.”
The goal, both Aguado and Scott said, should not be to keep newcomers out, but to build a sustainable community that is involved with its residents and institutions, and that is focused on improving its quality of life.
